The ultimate Icelandic experience. An immersive family friendly tour that will take you on a short hike through stunning landscape, while exploring and learning how Icelanders have managed to survive throughout the ages in this cold and seemingly hostile country.

Few things are more Icelandic than soaking in a natural hot spring deep inside the highlands in all kinds of weather. On this tour you will visit a little hot pool tucked away in a hidden ravine and literally dip your toes into the essence of being Icelandic through our ritual of a hot and cold foot baths!

Our knowledgeable guide will share stories and songs of survival and explain how Icelanders adapted to the most challenging of conditions. You will also have the opportunity to taste the very local fire water liquor and snack on food that has been preserved to last the harsh winter.

After we have dried our feet, we’ll wind our way back through the ravine and return not only refreshed but with a newfound appreciation for the incredible resilience of the Icelandic people.

More about this tour

Meeting point

All Outsiders tours start from Highland Base Kerlingarfjöll.

Find your guide at the reception 15 minutes before departure. Bring your backpack, an adventurous spirit and a smile - let's head OUTSIDE for an adventure!

Duration: 2-3 hrs

Distance: 3 km

Elevation gain: 100 m

Skill & fitness level: Novice. All fitness levels

Gear included: Spikes, if needed, and a towel

You bring: Warm clothes and socks, sturdy boots, wind- and waterproof jacket, gloves, buff and a hat plus your water bottle.

Min/max: 6/16 pax

Minimum age: 5 yrs

What to bring

Your swimwear and a towel. Warm clothes such as wool, fleece/soft-shell, hardshell and a puffy jacket are mandatory on all tours. On a good summer day it is possible to strip down to a thin shirt and stuff the rest in a small backpack, but usually only for a short while! The Icelandic weather is famously volatile and warm layers and rain gear should always be at hand.

Good and sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes are a must. On most tours we will encounter the legendary multicoloured mud of Kerlingarfjöll that tends to stick to the bottom of shoes like glue! Pair your boots with warm and soft hiking socks and you're golden.

Don't forget gloves. Yes, also in the summertime :) Plus something to cover your neck and head with. Preferably that something is made out of wool, which means it doesn't loose it's insulation qualities if wet.

Also bring sunglasses and hiking poles, if you've got them.

Last, but not least. Fill your water bottle with the pure Icelandic tap water and slip it into your backpack along with some energy bars / snacks. If the tour lasts more than 3 hrs. you should also pack a light lunch, such as a sandwich.
