Hike with a knowledgeable guide up a steep but relatively short ascent and then along the rocky mountain ridge trail to the top. There it is time to take a well deserved snack break while enjoying the amazing views. If conditions allow, the return hike will take us over a small glaciated snowfield, straight down to where we started.

After a thorough safety brief, we skin up, over a small glacier and up to the so-called Smile (you will understand when you see it!). Then we carve our turns down an amazing slope that leads us to a bubbling hot spring area. 

After some exploration, we skin back up to the Smile and swoosh back down to where we started.

The trail goes around Mænir mountain and offers magnificent glacier views and a chance to see a truly remote area of the Kerlingarfjöll mountain range.

We will run/hike on very varied surfaces such as mud, snow, sand and gravel and oftentimes there is no visible trail. The diverse landscape will surely somewhat slow us down, not only because it can be difficult to negotiate but also because we will want to stop and marvel in the beauty of our surroundings.

Our secret: We have discovered a genius method to create a steam bath. Are you ready to try it? We have also experimented with steam cooking over hot springs and will definitely be continuing our research on this hike. Can we boil eggs? Hot dogs? Join us and find out.

On our hike back we will for sure try to liberate mom’s toes, scramble up all the rocks we find along the way, talk about the scary meaning of Kerling in the Kerlingarfjöll mountains, examine every spider web, seek every snowfield and view from a safe distance the mountain of Thor, the god of thunder.

Maybe we will go all the way up Mænir mountain, which literally means the rooftop! Maybe not. But make no mistake, it will be absolutely necessary to sit down and do some serious snow sliding during our descent

Our mantra: If our clothes are still clean after the tour, we haven’t mucked around enough!

We will be heading east with Hofsjökull Glacier on our left and Kerlingarfjöll mountain range on our right. In front of us the tower of Lodmundur grows bigger by each step on our trusted skis. 

We will set up camp below Lodmundur and enjoy our lunch with the robust appetite that only outdoor activities bring. After lunch break we head back along a different and a bit more challenging route towards the Highland Base, skiing along Asgardsfjall, the mountain of the gods.  

This tour adapts to the current snow and ice situation.
